Youth Sports Volunteer

The sports section of the Recreation Services Division recruits volunteer coaches on a seasonal basis for its four youth sports leagues. Volunteer coaches must be 16 years and older and are required to undergo a certification process, which includes fingerprinting and mandatory meetings. Teen volunteers with athletic experience are needed to assist Recreation Leaders in a variety of youth sports programs. Teens will learn basic Recreation Leader responsibilities and serve as a youth organized play class instructor’s assistant, a youth sports volunteer coach, a special events assistant and more. For more information on becoming a youth sports volunteer, please call the Cerritos Sports Complex at (562) 916-8590.

During the 2013 season, there were 102 volunteer coaches who donated a total of 4,360 hours toward the City's Youth Basketball. There were 24 volunteer coaches who donated a total of 956 hours toward the City's Youth Baseball/Rookie T-Ball program.

Volunteers, age 13 years or older, are needed for park activities such as Friday Night Kids, Little One's Hour, Half Pint's Night, crafts, cooking and much more. Special events include the Halloween Festival, Easter Egg Hunts, Community Spring Festival and the July 4th Let Freedom Ring Celebration. Each volunteer must have a City of Cerritos Recreation Services Division Volunteer Application/Waiver on file, complete the fingerprinting process and attend an volunteer orientation workshop prior to being assigned to any program or event. The Application/Waiver is available at the bottom of this page or at any Cerritos community center. Fingerprinting is conducted the second Wednesday of every month, except holidays. Orientation workshops are held quarterly. Volunteers under the age of 18 must acquire a signature from their parent or guardian. Volunteers who complete at least 30 hours during the volunteer year will be invited to the annual teen volunteer recognition event. The demand for volunteers, assignments and hours vary from season to season. For more information regarding volunteer opportunities, please call Heritage Park at (562) 916-8570.

Be a "Park Guardian"

Many residents use, walk by, or drive by Cerritos neighborhood parks on a regular basis. There are an extremely low number of incidents reported, but those reports usually occur after the fact such as vandalisms, graffiti, etc.

As the “eyes and ears” of the Sheriff’s Department in a neighborhood watch, we are requesting that you make it a point to look at the activities from your nearby residences, or when you pass by. If you are in the park, take a moment to look a little closer at the facilities. If you notice any suspicious persons or vehicles, call the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station right away at 562-860-0044. (Remember, using a cell phone for a 911 call will connect you with the California Highway Patrol and cause an unnecessary delay in any local response.) If there is graffiti, please contact the Graffiti Hotline at 562-916-1233. To report any maintenance issue in any park, please call the 24-hour hotline at 562-916-1220.

While parks are an attraction for recreation and relaxation, they are also a lure for others that are looking for a place to congregate with less than legal intentions. Keep in mind that the parks within the City are closed from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. If you see someone in any closed park, please call Cerritos Sheriff’s Station. Alcohol cannot be consumed in any park at any time, nor is smoking permitted.

By maintaining awareness to these quality of life issues, we can ensure that our parks will be a place for our family, friends, and neighbors to safely enjoy.
