Cerritos Recycling Program

Updated January 11, 2023

Solid waste collection and recycling in Cerritos is provided by Athens Services. Athens Services trucks pick up trash from residents, businesses and industrial customers weekly.

The City's residential recycling program, approved in 2007, includes one blue barrel for recyclable materials (which are processed at a materials recovery facility), one green barrel for green waste and a third black barrel for all other waste.

The Cerritos recycling program was originally implemented on June 1, 1995 in response to Assembly Bill 939, the California Integrated Waste Management Act. Under this law, all California cities were required to divert 25 percent of their waste stream from landfills by 1995, and by 50 percent by the year 2000. Although the City worked extremely hard to divert the required amount of trash, it had fallen short of the diversion rate, and implemented a new three-barrel system in late 2007. The new system allows for the highest diversion rate at the lowest cost.

To determine your trash collection day, check the City's Trash Collection Schedule. For more information on trash collection, or on the citywide recycling program, call the Public Works Department at (562) 916-1226 to request a brochure or Athens Services at (833) 791-2376. You may also check out a copy of a 10-minute video called "Recycling in Cerritos" from Cerritos Public Library.
