Public Art Program

Updated January 30, 2023

Through the commitment of the City Council and the cooperation and generosity of developers and local businesses, Cerritos has established a collection of art in public places which beautifies the community. The collection includes works by nationally known, award-winning artists. It includes dynamic abstract sculptures, graceful depictions of people and wildlife, and sparkling water features.

Developers of all major commercial projects in Cerritos have the opportunity to participate in this exciting program. Cerritos developers submitting projects for approval valued at more than $250,000 are required to devote one percent of the building permit valuation to the City’s Art in Public Places program (not to exceed $450,000). The art fee applies to all new or renovated residential developments with four units or more, commercial and industrial buildings, and parking structures. The fee is included as a condition for precise plan approval. Developers are encouraged to select their own high-quality pieces, subject to approval by the City Council. Pieces may include sculptures, murals, monuments, frescoes, fountains, paintings, stained glass or ceramic works. Developers who opt to place the artwork on their property are responsible for the installation and maintenance.

Developers who do not wish to place artwork on their property are given the option to donate the appropriate amount to a fund that supports the Art in Public Places program. Developers may also donate a specific piece of artwork, subject to the City Council’s approval, for placement within Cerritos.
