MINUTES OF A JOINT SPECIAL MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CERRITOS AND
THE CERRITOS REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY
HELD MARCH 11, 2009
CALL TO ORDER
The Joint Special Meeting of the City Council and Redevelopment Agency was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Cerritos City Hall, 18125 Bloomfield Avenue, Cerritos, California.
INVOCATION
The invocation was offered by Pastor Dr. William Ebling.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Charles Sooter, Friends of the 1st CEB, led the assembly in the salute to the Flag.
ROLL CALL
The City Clerk noted attendance of the following Members of the City Council/Redevelopment Agency:
Councilwoman/Member Carol Chen
Councilman/Member Joseph Cho, Ph.D.
Councilwoman/Member Laura Lee
Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Chairman Bruce Barrows
Mayor/Chairman Jim Edwards
PUBLIC COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
There were no public comments.
INTRODUCTIONS
The Mayor/Chairman recognized elected and appointed dignitaries and representatives in the audience and thanked them for attending the meeting.
Councilmembers/Members introduced family and friends in attendance.
Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Chairman Bruce Barrows then presented outgoing Mayor/Chairman Edwards with a plaque and scrapbook in recognition of his year as Mayor/Chairman.
Mayor/Chairman Edwards reflected on his time in office, recognized members of his family and thanked them and others for their continued support.
OATH OF OFFICE
City Clerk Triggs administered the Oath of Office to Councilmembers-elect Carol Chen and Jim Edwards, and they assumed their seats at the dais.
REORGANIZATION
At this juncture, City Clerk Triggs declared the office of Mayor/Chair vacant and called for nominations for the office of Mayor/Chair.
Councilman/Member Edwards presented the qualifications of and nominated Bruce Barrows for the office of Mayor/Chairman. The nomination was seconded by Councilwoman/Member Chen. There were no other nominations. The City Clerk closed the nominations and declared Bruce Barrows elected to the office of Mayor/Chairman by acclamation.
The office of Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Chair was declared vacant by Mayor/Chairman Barrows and he called for nominations for the office of Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Chair.
Councilwoman/Member Lee presented the qualifications of and nominated Councilman/Member Cho for the office of Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Chairman. The nomination was seconded by Councilwoman/Member Chen. There were no other nominations. The Mayor/Chair closed the nominations and declared Joseph Cho elected to the office of Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Chairman by acclamation.
Mayor/Chairman Barrows thanked the Council/Agency for the opportunity to serve as Mayor/Chairman and commented briefly on the year ahead.
PRESENTATIONS FROM SPECIAL GUESTS
Various dignitaries and elected officials or their representatives presented Councilman/Member Edwards with plaques and proclamations in recognition of his service to the community during his year as Mayor.
COMMENTS FROM THE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS
The Mayor/Chairman and Councilmembers/Members each offered general comments on the coming year.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Council/Agency, the meeting was duly adjourned by the Mayor/Chairman at 8:30 p.m.
