State law adds $4 disability access fee on all business licenses

California Senate Bill 1186 (SB 1186) which was enacted in 2012, adds a state fee on any applicant for a local business license or similar instrument or permit, or renewal thereof. California Assembly Bill 1379 (AB 1379), which was enacted in 2017, increased the state fee from $1 to $4. The purpose is to increase disability access and compliance with construction-related accessibility requirements and to develop educational resources for businesses in order to facilitate compliance with federal and state disability laws, as specified.

The fee is required to be collected by all cities and counties throughout California, including the City of Cerritos. This new law requires that the City provide the following notices:
