Check with City before extending walls

Updated April 6, 2020

For privacy or security, many Cerritos residents choose to increase the height of the fences and walls surrounding their property.

If you're planning to extend a wall or fence beyond six feet high, or build a new fence or wall taller than six feet, you must gain approval from the Planning Division and obtain a building permit.

Depending on the materials used and how they are installed, extensions may make your fence or wall top-heavy and prone to toppling.

The Planning Division will work with you to make sure the materials you plan to use meet City requirements, and a City building inspector will ensure that your wall or fence extensions are attached safely.

For more information, of if you have questions about extensions you have already installed, please call the Community Development Department at (562) 916-1201 any time between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
