Protect Cerritos streets from trash and clutter

Updated January 11, 2023

After cleaning house or gardening, please remember to stash any cans or clippings out of public view, in your backyard or sideyard, until your scheduled trash collection day.

Garbage cans and bags should be set out at the curb no earlier than sunset the day before collection, and cans should be taken in by midnight after trash collection. If you use a cleaning or gardening service, please share these rules with the supervisor.

Garage sales

Rather than throwing them away, you may want to sell your old clothes, household items, appliances and more. Cerritos homeowners are allowed to hold up to two garage sales every 12 months, which can last up to three days each. No permit is needed.

The best way to advertise your garage sale is the local newspaper or Pennysaver. You may also post signs, but remember to keep them off of public property, such as street signs, parkways, trees and walls. Signs are not allowed in street medians, as they pose a traffic hazard, and any signs must be taken down the night your sale ends.

For more information on Code Enforcement in Cerritos, call (562) 916-1203. To schedule a free pick-up of bulky trash items, such as old appliances, rolls of carpet, mattresses or bales of tree branches, call Athens Services at (833) 791-2376 at least 24 hours before your trash collection day.
