Southern California Gas Company to install advanced meters
Updated October 9, 2012
Southern California Gas Company is in the process of upgrading approximately 6 million existing natural gas meters with wireless advanced gas meters. The meters will be installed on 12,000 homes in Cerritos and a nearby city in late October 2012. The installation of the meters on Cerritos homes will resume in January 2013.
Existing gas meters will be refaced to include a communication device that will turn on for a fraction of a second each day to automatically read, encrypt and transmit the information to the Gas Company. Account holders will have on-line access to view their hourly, daily and weekly gas usage, as well as up to 13 months of monthly data.
In most cases, the advanced meter will be installed on the existing analog gas meter, although some meters may require a routine replacement. Several weeks prior to the installation, the Gas Company will send a notification letter with additional information to each account holder.
In Cerritos, three 40-foot poles will be installed with devices to collect the data from the new meters. The poles will be located in unobtrusive areas at the Cerritos Sports Complex, Heritage Park and Cerritos Park East.
