Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ceremony and youth contests planned

In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the City of Cerritos will host a special ceremony on Monday, January 20 at 10 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA). The public is invited to attend this free event, which will include remarks by the Cerritos City Council and community involvement through songs and comments. The CCPA is located at 18000 Park Plaza Drive.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Cerritos Library is sponsoring art and writing contests for students. All art and writing contest entries should represent the theme of "One People, One Nation, One Dream."

The art contest is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12. Participants may submit one art entry, no larger than 12" x 18," using any drawing or painting materials.

The writing contest is open to students in grades 7 through 12. Participants may submit one writing entry, which may be a poem or an essay with no more than 300 words, preferably typed on letter-size paper.

Contest entry forms are available at the Cerritos Library and on the City's website at Completed art and writing entries must be dropped off at the Cerritos Library's Children's Help Desk by 8:30 p.m. on Friday, January 3. The library is located at 18025 Bloomfield Avenue.

After judging, selected entries will be displayed at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ceremony. Selected authors may be invited to present their entry during the ceremony, and selected art entries will be on display at the Cerritos Library from late-January through February.
