Work to commence on C-5 water well

August 31, 2018

The Cerritos City Council recently authorized the expenditure of $100,000 for the redevelopment of the C-5 water well, which will be reimbursed by the Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD). The well is located next to the Pioneer Villas senior housing community and will be a significant addition to the City's water supply network. The redevelopment of the well will include water sampling and additional items required by the Los Angeles County Regional Water Quality Board.

The City Council also authorized City staff to develop and distribute a Request for Proposal for design services for the complete rehabilitation of the well.

The City completed the drilling phase and testing of the well source in 2001. In 2007, in anticipation of the water well coming online, the City completed the installation of a transmission pipe connected to the City's existing water system. Since then, funding to complete the project has not been available.

In 2010, the City of Cerritos, along with several other local cities, sued the WRD for unlawful groundwater replenishment assessments. A settlement was reached in 2015, which required WRD to fund projects totaling $5 million for Cerritos, Downey and Signal Hill. The City of Cerritos will receive approximately $1.8 million from the settlement, which has been approved by the WRD to be used on the C-5 well.
