Cerritos City Council reorganizes

Grace Hu was selected as mayor of Cerritos and Mark Pulido as mayor pro tem by their colleagues during the City Council's annual reorganization meeting and mayoral transition on April 26.

A Cerritos resident for more than 40 years, Mayor Hu was first elected to the Cerritos City Council in 1992, was mayor from 1995 to 1996 and was re-elected to the City Council in 1997. She served a second term as mayor from 1999 to 2000. Hu was previously on the City's Property Preservation Commission from 1991 to 1992. During her time on the City Council, Hu served on the City's Budget, County Health Department & Health Insurance, Finance, Legal Services, Legislative and Performing Arts committees. She was also the City's alternate delegate to the Gateway Cities Council of Governments and the Council's liaison to Cerritos Community College.

Hu is a real estate broker and investment consultant. She has a graduate degree in business administration from the University of San Francisco and a bachelor of law degree from Catholic Fu-Jen University in Taiwan.

Mayor Pro Tem Mark E. Pulido was elected to the Cerritos City Council in March 2011. He served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2013 to 2014, as Mayor in 2014 and was re-elected to the City Council in 2015. A Cerritos resident since 1972, Mayor Pro Tem Pulido is a Council liaison to the ABC Unified School District and the liaison to Cerritos Community College. He serves on the City's Performing Arts and Library committees. Mayor Pro Tem Pulido is the Council's delegate to the Gateway Cities Council of Governments – 91/605/405 Corridor Cities Committee and an alternate delegate to the League of California Cities, Sanitation Districts 2, 3, 18 & 19/Waste Management and the SELACO Workforce Development Board – Policy Board.

Mayor Pro Tem Pulido is the District Director for Congressman Alan Lowenthal. He graduated from Whitney High School and received his bachelor's degree in History and Asian American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his Master of Public Policy degree from The University of Chicago.

Councilmember Jim Edwards was elected to the Cerritos City Council in 2005, was re-elected in 2009, and served as Mayor of Cerritos from 2008 to 2009. He was re-elected to the City Council again in 2015. A Cerritos resident for more than 35 years, Councilmember Edwards previously served as a Cerritos Parks and Recreation Commissioner from 1988 to 1997 and 2003 to 2005, and as a Cerritos Community Safety Committee Member from 1997 to 2003. He served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Arts Education at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in 2013 and 2014, including a term as president.

Councilmember Edwards received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education from Whittier College, where he also was awarded a Standard Secondary Teaching Credential. He received a master's degree in Educational Technology from National University. He is retired from a career as a teacher and administrator in the ABC Unified School District.

Councilmember Naresh Solanki was elected to the Cerritos City Council in 2015. He became Mayor Pro Tem in 2016. A Cerritos resident since 1988, Councilmember Solanki previously served as a Cerritos Planning Commissioner from 2007 to 2015. Councilmember Solanki owns and is the CEO/President of a chain of retail grocery supermarkets located throughout Southern California.

Councilmember Frank Aurelio Yokoyama was elected to the Cerritos City Council in 2017. A Cerritos resident since 1976, he previously served on the Cerritos Planning Commission from 2011 to 2013. Yokoyama is a local businessman, attorney and a youth sports coach. He graduated from UC Berkeley Business School and Harvard Law School.

Outgoing Mayor George Ray was honored at the meeting for his contributions to the community during his term. Ray was elected to the Cerritos City Council in 2013.

Outgoing Councilmember Carol Chen also was honored at the meeting for her years of service to the City during her term. Elected to the Cerritos City Council in June 2008, Chen served as Mayor from 2011 to 2012 and 2015 to 2016.
