Cerritos celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Month in May
April 25, 2014
The City of Cerritos will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May with performances by community organizations, poster and writing contests for students and cultural displays. The month pays tribute to the contributions generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to American history, society and culture.
An evening of lively music and dance performances by community cultural groups will be presented at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Cerritos Park East. Seating is limited and will be available on a first come, first seated basis. Light refreshments will be served.
The poster and writing contests for students have a theme of "What Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Means to Me." Students in grades kindergarten through 6 are invited to design a poster depicting the theme. Cerritos Library is presenting a writing contest for students in grades 7 through 12 to express the theme. Entry forms and instructions for the contests are available at Cerritos City Hall, Cerritos Library, Cerritos Park East, Heritage Park and Liberty Park.
The Cerritos Senior Center at Pat Nixon Park will present displays representing the cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands throughout May. Seniors will also enjoy cultural performances during select lunch programs.
