THE POSITION:
Senior Center Specialist II: Under direction, performs entry-level work in conducting recreational, educational and health services activities at the Senior Center. May serve in a leadership capacity, coordinating the work of subordinates and volunteers. Performs other duties as assigned.
Senior Center Specialist III: Under direction, plans, organizes and coordinates a wide variety of social services, including recreational, educational and health services at the Senior Center. May serve in a leadership capacity, supervising the work of subordinates. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Characteristics: May work a varying schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Senior Center Specialist II: Plans, organizes and conducts recreational, educational and health services activities at the Senior Center. Prepares and distributes flyers, brochures and posters promoting classes, activities, services and special events. Maintains accurate records concerning program participation. Set up for daily activities and programs. Responsible for the issuance, use, care and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Attends staff meetings. Collects and processes registration deposits and money.
Senior Center Specialist III: Develops and implements a diversified program including recreational and educational activities, special events and social and health services for older adults. Assists with coordination, scheduling and supervision of rental reservations. Prepares and distributes flyers, brochures and posters promoting classes, activities, services and special events. Monitors the effectiveness of current programs. Maintains accurate records concerning program participation. Assists in the development of support groups at the Senior Center. Set up for daily activities and programs. Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Attends staff meetings.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Senior Center Specialist II & III:
Knowledge of: The methods and procedures for conducting and supervising recreational, cultural, educational and health programs for older adults. Community resources for senior services. The needs of older adults and the services available to them in the community.
Ability to: Plan, organize and conduct programs, special events for older adults. Establish and maintain excellent relations with the public and City staff. React well and assist patrons in difficult and emergency situations. Communicate effectively with the public and co-workers, and exercise good judgment, courtesy and diplomacy. Maintain accurate records and prepare thorough reports. Respond proactively to the needs of the public, supervisors and peer staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a senior center environment. An incumbent sits, stands and walks and may reach, bend, crouch, twist, grasp, lift and carry push, pull and drag boxes of senior center supplies and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Must have valid CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificates or obtain certificates within three months after hire date. A valid California driver’s license is required.
Senior Center Specialist II: Six months paid or volunteer experience working with older adults and enrollment in college with a major in gerontology, recreation, social work or related field.
Senior Center Specialist III: One year of college class work in the field of gerontology, social work, recreation or related field and one year experience in conducting recreation programs/services for older adults.

All applications will be reviewed in detail. Those applicants possessing the most desired qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral exam. City appointments are contingent upon successful completion of a records check, physical examination and verification of United States citizenship or legal authorization to be employed. The successful applicant will be offered employment on a part-time basis only. Employment with the City may be discontinued at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal or hearing.
