Rigger Specialist

THE POSITION: Under the direction of the Technical Administrator, is responsible for stage rigging and carpentry functions including production, maintenance, and inventory of rigging equipment and performance requirements. Performs related duties as required.

Job Characteristic:May work a varying schedule of hours which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Interpret, evaluate and implement rigging requests and demands of artist or attractions for performance.
  • Consult and advise artist, attractions and users on the appropriate use of the rigging system and conditions in the auditorium during performance.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on all stage rigging systems including, but not limited to, counterweight systems, mechanical drive systems, air caster systems and all movable building systems.
  • Maintain all stage rigging related equipment, including preventative maintenance, inspection and repair. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, the following types of components:
    • Power distribution systems
    • Chain, belt and wire rope mechanical drives
    • Synthetic and wire rope rigging
    • Relay type logic circuitry
    • Pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Maintain inspection and repair documentation records.
  • Maintain an active training and qualification program for all rigging and movable building systems in the facility.
  • Design or supervise the rigging requirements for users as required.
  • Act as house rigger/head carpenter for performances in facility.
  • Supervise part-time staff.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Knowledge of:

  • Technical theatre, basic lighting, sound and work in an active multi-purpose performing arts complex.
  • Production and presentation rigging for theater, dance, musicals, opera and concerts including contemporary musical events.
  • Electricity, mechanics and pneumatics.
  • Stage related equipment.

Ability to:

  • Communicate with road companies and technicians using the theater.
  • Interpret and implement rigging requests and requirements.
  • Perform carpentry work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors in a theater environment. An incumbent stands and walks on level and uneven/slippery surfaces, kneels, crouches, climbs ladders and inclines, twists, bends, pushes, pulls, reaches, grasps, lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. A Rigger Specialist may be exposed to noisy tools and equipment and drive a City vehicle on City business. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be: A degree in Technical Theatre or related field and two years experience in Technical Production in a large arts complex. An Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Certification is desired. A valid California driver's license is required.
