Recreation Leader IV


SALARY: $14.62 -$18.48 Per Hour

FINAL FILING DATE: Open Until Filled

Positions are limited to 20 hrs/wk or 960 hours in a fiscal year.

THE POSITION: Under the direction of a Recreation Services Coordinator is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating a wide range of leisure activities at a community park or recreation center. May serve in a supervisory capacity, directing the activities of subordinate staff. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Characteristic: May work a varying schedule of hours which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.


  • Develop and/or coordinate city-wide recreation services programs.
  • Organize a variety of teen programs and special events.
  • Assist in the registration of recreation programs.
  • Responsible for security and proper maintenance of facilities, equipment and materials.
  • Prepare reports, maintain records and attend staff meetings.
  • May act as Recreation Services Coordinator in his/her absence.
  • May plan and coordinate large indoor special events and meetings, such as weddings, seminars and conferences.


Knowledge of:

  • The objectives of municipal leisure service programs.
  • Methods of organizing, conducting and supervising recreational and cultural programs.
  • Specialized skills necessary for specific areas of expertise.
  • First aid practices.
  • Knowledge of resources and procedures to implement large social gatherings.

Ability to:

  • Develop and organize recreation programs.
  • Prepare accurate reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of leadership.
  • Work as part of a recreation services team.
  • Supervise and train a small staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outdoors, on-site in a variety of recreational settings, such as a golf course, sports complex, community center, day camp, and/or playground environment. Some work may be performed in an office environment and in a variety of field trip locations. Office work requires sitting for periods of time and the use of a computer keyboard and screen. An incumbent drives a vehicle on City business, will be exposed to the elements and sits, stands, walks, kneels, crouches, twists, climbs steps and sloping surfaces, reaches, bends, crawls and grasps and may walk or run on slippery and uneven surfaces, push, pull, drag, lift and carry supplies and program equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds from waist to overhead. An incumbent performs emergency CPR and first aid and may be exposed to the blood and other bodily fluids of program participants. Depending on the area assigned an incumbent may also be exposed to dust and odors. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be: an A.A. degree with a recreation major and twelve (12) months experience planning, organizing and conducting recreation programs. Must have valid CPR, First Aide, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificates or obtain certificates within three months after hire date. A valid California driver's license is required.
