Note: Successful candidates must be available to work the following shifts: At least two shifts Monday-Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and at least one shift Saturday or Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
Position is limited to 20 hrs/wk or 960 hours in a fiscal year

Job Characteristic: Works a varying schedule of hours which may include nights, early mornings, weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Recreation Leader III (Swim Instructor)—Under direction, organizes and instructs swim classes; cleans and maintains swimming pool and facilities; teaches swim strokes and water safety rules to different age groups and individuals with varying abilities; develops special aquatic events; explains and enforces facility regulations, policies and procedures to participants; assists in performing cleaning services of pool and other assigned areas; maintains accurate records and prepares reports; performs related work as required.
Recreation Leader IV (Swim Instructor/Lifeguard)—Under direction, organizes and instructs swim classes; observes swimmers and pool area; responds to unsafe conditions or potential hazards; cleans and maintains swimming pool and facilities; teaches swim strokes and water safety rules to different age groups and individuals with varying abilities; develops special aquatic events; explains and enforces facility regulations, policies and procedures to participants; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid; monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents; assists in performing cleaning services of pool and other assigned areas; maintains accurate records and prepares reports; performs related work as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Recreation Leader III (Swim Instructor)
Knowledge of:
Beginning through advanced swim strokes; lifesaving and swimming principles and practices; first aid principles and practices.
Ability to:
Teach swimming methods; organize and conduct a variety of aquatic programs; maintain and work safely with a variety of equipment used in pool activities; perform maintenance and cleaning services of pool and other assigned areas; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; maintain accurate records and prepare reports; pass initial and follow-up tests of safety and pool procedures as well as successfully complete routine skills testing such as backboard drills and CPR reviews.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Possession of current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate, Standard First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certificates and a valid California driver's license are required.

Applicants may complete certification requirements during the testing process, providing certification is completed prior to his/her first day of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The majority of work is performed indoors on a pool deck or in a swimming pool. An incumbent sits, stands, walks and runs on slippery and uneven surfaces, kneels, crouches, twists, climbs ladders and inclines, swims, reaches, bends, crawls, and pushes, pulls, drags, grasps and lifts pool/community center equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, an incumbent physically must be able to react quickly to lifesaving emergencies and will perform strenuous physical activity requiring physical strength and endurance when performing water rescues. During the course of some rescue and first aid tasks, an incumbent may be exposed to blood, other bodily fluids/products, communicable diseases and other related health hazards. An incumbent operates an oxygen tank and will have exposure to pool water and pool chemicals, cleaning solvents and disinfectants and electrical and mechanical hazards. When work is performed in an office or at a public counter, an incumbent may use a personal computer. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
