Geographic Information Systems Clerk


SALARY RANGE: $19.64 - $24.33 Per Hour

FINAL FILING DATE: Open Until Filled

Position is limited to 20hrs/wk or 960 hours in a fiscal year

THE POSITION: Under the direction of the GIS Administrator, the Geographic Information Systems Clerk performs technical geographic information systems input, including editing and system analysis, to produce a wide variety of maps, reports and other projects; operate and maintain the geographic information system database, software and hardware; and do other related work as required.

Job Characteristic: Works a varying schedule of hours which includes early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.


  • Participate in strategic planning related to GIS applications for the City.
  • Compile data from various sources in order to produce maps and other outputs as necessary for various departments from GIS related software.
  • Provide primary data input services for the Community Development Department into the GIS system and assist as necessary in data input for other departments.
  • Convert existing hard-copy information into digital format as required.
  • Input, implement and maintain GIS applications, databases and maps for the Community Development Department as directed.
  • Work closely with both the Engineering Division and the Management Information Services Division to realize the City's goals and objectives for its GIS system.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new uses for the GIS system.
  • Make recommendations regarding potential streamlining and increased automation related to same.


Knowledge of:

  • Mapping skills, map production and map requirements.
  • Functions of a Community Development Department.
  • English grammar, usage, punctuation and spelling.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an office environment and requires sitting for prolonged periods of time using a computer keyboard and screen. The incumbent stands, walks, twists, reaches, bends, crouches and kneels and may grasp, push, pull, drag and lift supplies weighing up to 30 pounds. The incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience which would provide the stated knowledge and abilities. Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in geography or related field is desirable but not required. A valid California driver's license is required.
