Cerritos City Council Meeting Minutes

MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CERRITOS
HELD JANUARY 27, 2011

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Cerritos City Hall, 18125 Bloomfield Avenue, Cerritos, California.

ROLL CALL

The following Members of the City Council were in attendance:

Councilman Bruce Barrows
Councilwoman Carol Chen
Councilman Jim Edwards
Mayor Pro Tem Laura Lee
Mayor Joseph Cho, Ph.D.

PUBLIC COMMENTS

There were no public comments.

Review and consideration of present and future Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) Seasons

City Manager Art Gallucci and Theater Executive Director Dianne Cheney provided a report. A mock-up of the upcoming season brochure was presented and proposals for performance genres and the gala event were discussed.

Councilwoman Chen suggested a goal of $250 per couple for the Season Opening Gala Fundraising Event cocktail party. She also suggested finding sponsorship opportunities for the event in order to increase the net donation to the CCPA Endowment.

CONSENSUS (Chen): Directed staff to have a goal of $250 per person for the Season Opening Gala Fundraising Event cocktail party and to find sponsorship opportunities for the gala event in order to increase the fundraising opportunity.

Harshad J. Mody expressed his concern regarding the losses incurred by the CCPA, inquired as to the initial financial investment in developing the facility, and the staffing costs for the Theater Executive Director.

Councilman Edwards commended Ms. Cheney on her efforts and expressed support for the upcoming scheduling of performance and fundraising programs.

Councilman Barrows expressed support to increase the number of shows which have traditionally generated revenue. Mr. Gallucci affirmed that staff would return to Council if the opportunity for revenue-generating shows presents itself.

Mayor Pro Tem Lee commented on the educational opportunities provided by the CCPA to youth. She suggested adding to any advertising for the theater and the fact that there is no parking fee.

Councilwoman Chen noted that non-profit organizations and community groups are allowed to use the facility at no-cost.

Mayor Cho commented that there is no civic theater in the nation which makes a profit. He also noted the high number of students the CCPA serves on an annual basis.

MOTION: A motion was made by Councilman Barrows, seconded by Councilman Edwards, and carried (5 – 0) to receive and file the report. The motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT

The meeting adjourned at 4:29 p.m.
